A lot more oak that i thought i would get initially, sugary sweet with bitter orange peel, definite oak spice influence, vanilla essence and a hint of some fruity sweets
I've been wanting to spend more time with spirits, other than whisky, over the last few years as I really do enjoy other spirits, especially Gin and Rum so when an oppportunity arose to partake in a Rum Tweet Tasting I jumped at it.
Mount Gay rum, which dates back to the 1700's, is recognised as the one of the oldest Rum producers in the world and is based in Barbados, they are a small distiller, producing only some 500k cases per annum.
Hosted jointly by The Floating Rum Shack and Mount Gay rum we chatted through 4 different expressions, with the notes listed below.
Thank you to the The Floating Rum Shack and Mount Gay Rum for including me on this tasting.
First up in thie tasting hosted by The Floating Rum Shack and Mount Gay Rum was the Mount Gay Black Bottle.
Released in 2014 and a combination(blend) of both pot still and column still distillate matured in heavily charred ex-bourbon barrels.
This is tasty stuff and although there is a kick of spice that might not suit some it's a great sipping rum, and i expect it would be fabulous in cocktails too.
Available to buy in many supermarkets or from specialists like The Whisky Exchange

quite soft initially, treacle toffees and Halloween treacle scones, then oak wood spices, hints of aromatic leaf, ripe banana and then a dry tannic mouthfeel

Matured only in Copper CPot still this has more more bassy herbaceous notes that some described as rubbery, lovely stuff but i think i preferred the Column one.

Matured only in Copper Column stills, like grain whisky, this has a much lighter, almost floral character and although spirity on the nose and palate it really has something very nice to offer and was one of my favourites..
