MacDuff / The Whisky Barrel

Macduff 25yr Burns Malt (The Whisky Barrel) Review

Macduff 25yr Burns Malt (The Whisky Barrel) Macduff, or The Deveron as they call it on the official bottlings due to a copyright issue, is a highland distillery which I've tried a number of times now, the official bottlings are all quite light and subtle, some even describable as a watery.

I was really looking forward to trying this The Whisky Barrel Burns Malt bottling, hoping that the cask strength ABV would add a better mouthfeel, more oily waxy and a lot more flavours coming through.

The nose takes a lot of getting into, you really need to spend time on this to,get anything from the nose. The palate kicks in though and the mouthfeel is completely different to anything else I've tried from this distillery, the palate and finish work really well, but the nose is really light.

Thanks to The Whisky Barrel for the official sample.

Tasting Notes & Details

Initially quite light, fresh fruit salad with light syrup, very watery fruits of light honeydew melon, the longer I spend with this the more spices and stewed dark fruits, hints of Demerara sugar hiding in the background too

Spices come through first, lots of lovely clove infused stewed dark fruits, light syrup and that honeydew melon again, tangy notes coming through also.

Spicy, then sweet and dry as the finish goes along.
