Balblair 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky Review

Balblair 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky In mid 2019 Balblair replaced their highly acclaimed and much awarded vintage range with a new range of age statement whiskies, I was lucky enough to partake in a twitter tasting of the 12, 15, 17 and 18 year old expressions and these are my notes and impressions of the 12 year old.

The starter dram in this range, this has notes that pinit directly to being a Highland dram, lots of fruitiness and a hint of spice, but for me this lacks something and what I really couldn't say. The nose initially is a little unpleasant but that seems to burn off pretty quickly, and there are sweet fruity notes that i definitely do like, but it seems to be missing something, that i would normally have put down to ABV but this is 46% so it is not that.

For me it maybe has a bit too many refill casks and not enough first fill to amp it up a little, whatever though it is still very drinkable, I would just like a bit more something from it.

Available to purchase from all good specialists such as Master of Malt.

This Balblair was tasted as part of the #BalblairWhisky Tweet Tasting, thank you to Balblair for supplying the official samples.

Tasting Notes & Details

Initially something a little unpleasant that disappears quickly a rubbery cabbage note, then it moves to fruity orchard fruit notes powdery spices (cinnamon & 5 spice) then hints of icing sugar, sugary water and ovaltine

Light fruits, orchard fruit elements there but very wishy washy, more light melon and gentle kiwi, a hint of ginger/pepper spice on the tip of the tongue, touches of citrus hiding in the background.

A short finish that disappears a bit too quick for my liking
